Dentures & Partials An Overview

Dentures and partial dentures have been the most popular tooth replacement option for patients who have lost several consecutive teeth or an entire arch of teeth. At Ridgetop Dental in Northern Virginia, we offer the latest materials and techniques for replacing your lost teeth with a cosmetic denture that can give you back a beautiful, functional smile.

Dr. Datta Malyavantham and his associates have years of training and experience in advanced restorative and cosmetic dental procedures. We offer Smile Design services, using digital dentistry to help you achieve the smile you have always wanted with solutions that are tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Dentures and partial dentures will be custom made to match the aesthetics and structure of your smile out of high quality ceramics that will look and feel like natural teeth. Digital diagnostics enable us to more accurately design your new cosmetic dentures for a more secure and lasting fit. In many cases, Dr. Datta will recommend the use of dental implants to secure your denture or partial, offering a permanent restoration that will offer key benefits for your long term dental health:

  • Reduction of bone loss in the jaw, maintaining its overall shape
  • Stable and secure new smile- no risk of your teeth “falling out”
  • No daily use of adhesives or need for cleaning

Implant secured dentures are typically placed using a process called All-On-FourĀ®. This involves the strategic placement of smaller dental implants that can be completed in a day and will hold a hybrid denture securely in place for a permanent smile.

Dentures & Partials What to Expect

The process for restoring your missing teeth with a denture or partial denture will begin with a thorough examination and discussion to determine the condition of your oral health and your cosmetic goals. We will go over all treatment options and work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that meets your unique needs.

The treatment planning phase is very important and has an impact on the final result of your restoration. Ridgetop Dental uses advanced digital technology for evaluating the structure of your smile. Digital photography can be used to design a denture that complements your appearance as well as restoring function.

Dental impressions will be taken and a temporary denture may be placed to enable you to get used to your new smile and to give the gum tissues a chance to adapt before taking final impressions to be used in fabricating the denture. This multi step process can help to alleviate slippage which occurs as the soft mouth tissues change to accommodate the new appliance and reduce its stability.

Dentures & Partials FAQs

Can you get implant dentures if you have no bone structure?

No. When a tooth is lost, the underlying bone is no longer stimulated and the bone may break down. If you wait too long before replacing the lost teeth, there will not be enough bone to hold any implants. Dental implants help maintain bone stability and promote healthy bone growth, but only if there is enough bone.

When should I replace my old dentures?

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons recommends replacing removable dentures every 7 to 15 years. The range is wide because your dentures can last quite some time with excellent care and oral hygiene. Ask your dentist before assuming that you need a denture replacement.

Why are my dentures turning black?

Improper care is the number-one reason for dentures turning dark, growing mold, and staining. Make sure to brush diligently, wash, and soak your dentures every day before bed. Soaking them in mouthwash will help remove bacteria you might have missed otherwise. Some denture adhesives can also turn dentures black if not completely removed after every use.

Why do my dentures not fit anymore?

Your mouth goes through changes over time. Without natural teeth supporting your mouth structure, changes can be a bit more drastic. Bone loss happens a bit more rapidly, gums can recede faster than normal, and facial sagging can occur. All of these issues and more can lead to dentures not fitting like they used to. That’s why it is recommended that dentures be periodically replaced.
