Teeth Whitening What to Expect
Teeth whitening is a simple, painless process and can be completed in about an hour in our Northern VA dentist office or over the course of about 2 weeks at home. In both cases, our professional products from Opalescence will whiten and brighten your smile up to 6 full shades. Dr. Datta recommends that you begin treatment with a clean and healthy smile and he will examine your teeth and gums to look for any signs of disease that could impact results during your consultation.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
An in-office treatment will take about one hour, during which most patients relax, read or enjoy entertainment as we transform their smile. Using laser technology, the professional bleaching agent is applied and will penetrate the enamel of the tooth for a deeper treatment and beautiful results that can last a year or more with good oral hygiene and avoiding common lifestyle habits that stain and darken the teeth: tobacco use/smoking, dark foods and dark beverages.
Take Home Teeth Whitening
A take home teeth whitening treatment will require a brief office visit for dental impressions. These will be necessary for the fabrication of custom fit bleaching trays to be used at home with the professional bleaching agent.
You will receive a set of custom made trays and the bleaching gel that will be applied before placing them securely over the teeth each day. The custom fit trays will reduce any sensitivity that can result when the gel contacts the soft tissues repeatedly. They will also serve to ensure a consistency of application for a better result.
The trays will be used for a specified amount of time daily for about 2 weeks and your results will gradually emerge.
Both types of teeth whitening can be maintained with good oral hygiene and routine dental care. Periodic touch ups can boost the longevity of your fresh, white smile.
No, traditional teeth whitening will not work on dental restorations. Most modern dental restorations are made with highly stain-resistant materials that do not easily stain. Using mouthwash every day and fluoride toothpaste can help deter stains from accumulating on your teeth and restorations.
The teeth whitening procedure removes surface stains and can leave your teeth temporarily sensitive. This is normal and will go away after a couple of days. Fresh tooth enamel is exposed and that’s why you experience sensitivity. all you have to do is avoid really hot or cold foods for a short period of time.
No. All teeth whitening treatments, weather done at the dentist or not, are not permanent. You will need routine treatment if you want to keep your teeth perfectly white for a long time. Diligent brushing, flossing, using mouthwash, and visiting the dentist will ensure that your treatment will last longer and need less followup treatments.
