Tooth bonding can serve both cosmetic and restorative purposes and is suitable for both children and adults with mild to moderate concerns. We recommend our younger patients use dental bonding until their teeth have fully formed and more permanent solutions can be used. Composite resin comes in a variety of shades so your bonded teeth will blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile. Because it does not involve a dental laboratory, the procedure is typically completed during one visit and results can last for many years with proper dental care. Tooth bonding can be used to treat:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

Tooth bonding is often a great option for patients considering or needing a smile makeover who are not yet ready for a more permanent solution such as porcelain veneers.

Tooth Bonding What to Expect

The Tooth Bonding Process

The tooth bonding procedure is generally painless and completed during your visit. You should plan to be at our dentist office for about thirty minutes up to one hour. Your dentist at Ridgetop Dental will first clean the teeth that are going to be bonding so that they are plaque-free and clean. Next, they will prepare the tooth surface by etching away a small amount of tooth structure that will open up tiny spores on the tooth’s surface. This will create a surface that will bond easily with the composite resin. The composite resin material is then thinly painted onto the tooth’s surface, filling the tiny holes creating a strong bond.

We will carefully apply and sculpt the composite resin into place, creating a natural and comfortable new tooth surface or shape that is color matched for the most aesthetically pleasing result. Once you and your dentist are happy with the way your tooth looks and it fits perfectly with your bite, we’ll move on to the final step. The final step is to cure the resin with a special hand held curing light and polish the new surface for a natural luster.

Caring For Your Bonded Teeth

Your newly bonded teeth should be brushed and flossed daily. You should visit our dentist office for a professional teeth cleaning at least twice per year, just the same as the rest of your teeth. It is important for our patients to understand that composite resin can easily be stained. To avoid this, you should avoid smoking, drinking wine, tea and coffee as much as possible. While bonded teeth can be stained, they cannot be whitened like your natural teeth. If you attempt to whiten your teeth after the bonding procedure, you risk the bonded teeth not matching the rest of your now whitened teeth. With proper care and maintenance, your bonded teeth should last three to ten years.
